The islands and villages overlooking Lake Maggiore

Welcome to one of the largest lakes in Italy. Lake Maggiore belongs to the Terra dei Laghi, together with Lake Como and Lake Garda. There are countless beautiful Swiss and Italian villages overlooking Lake Maggiore.

  • Luino: worth visiting are Madonna del Carmine Church, the private chapel at the Serbelloni Palazzo Verbania, and the Paleontological Civic Archaeological Museum. And let’s not forget Luino Market, where you’ll find over 350 stalls every Wednesday.
  • Arona: admire Piazza del Popolo, the fifteenth-century Casa del Podestà, and the Sacro Monte di San Carlo and Colossus of San Carlo.
  • Cannobio: a fishing village boasting a romantic promenade along Lake Maggiore. Make sure you check out the Santuario della SS. Pietà, the Collegiata di San Vittore, Santa Marta Oratory, the Palazzo della Ragione, the Municipal Tower, Rocca Vitaliana, and Il Leone.
  • Cannero: a delightful village on the shores of the lake, and a brilliant starting point for trips to smaller rural villages and enchanting woodland and orchards. Numerous exhibitions, markets and events are held here throughout the year, including the Spring Camellia Show and the Citrus Fruit Show.
  • Stresa: check out the grounds of Villa Pallavicino, the 1770 Villa Ducale and the International Centre for Rosminian Studies.
  • Angera: here you’ll find a charming bay, the island of Partegora, the Rocca di Angera, and the Doll and Fashion Museum.
  • Isola Bella: home to the Palazzo Borromeo, caves, and terraced gardens.
  • Isola dei Pescatori: the parish church contains a silver bust of San Carlo Borromeo.
  • Isole Borromeo – Isola Madre: botanical gardens, the late-sixteenth-century Palazzo Borromeo and a collection of seventeenth-century paintings, puppet theatres, dolls, and uniforms worn by servants at the Casa Borromeo.
  • Pallanza: home to beautiful botanical gardens surrounding Villa Taranto.
  • Lugano: the largest city in Italian-speaking Switzerland. A cultural and economic hub home to numerous historical marvels. The Curia Vescovile, San Lorenzo Cathedral, San Rocco Church, the Lutheran Evangelical Church, and the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto, to name a few!
  • Locarno: the third-largest city in Italian-speaking Switzerland. Home to numerous monuments and historical buildings. You’ll find lots of churches and works of art in this city.
  • Ascona: another city in the Canton of Ticino, not far from Locarno. There are lots of enchanting landscapes and historic buildings to admire here. It’s also famous for its Jazz Festival dedicated to New Orleans.
  • Isole di Brissago: in the Swiss part of Lake Maggiore. Admire the botanical park in the Canton of Ticino, with over 1,700 species of plants from all over the world.
  • Val Verzasca: a Swiss valley famous for its natural beauty and a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Here, you can admire the Cappella del Vescovo, the Casa della Lana, the Museo Valle Verzasca, and the Castello dei Marcacci.
